“All right I think it should be done. I haven't seen it myself though.” Jesse answered. The group just stood by in silence as Jesse put in various computer commands. Eventually, the image of a younger version of the man who was lying in front of the girl popped up and started to explain: "Hey I am doctor Sandroff and I am a geneticist. Imagine if you could regrow limbs. Imagine if you had an amazing sense of smell. Anything. An amazing sight, night vision or even stamina levels much higher than our best athletes. Well, that is possible. Everything we are, is encoded in our DNA. Now imagine if you could take the best parts of DNA from animal or other people with certain genetic characteristics. And incorporate them in your DNA. We could cure ourself of almost any disease, Get amazing powers! We could become gods! But unfortunately, the major health organizations don’t share that vision. Which is why I am forced to move my research underground. I have found someone willing to fund me. I can't name them for obvious reasons, but this is the start. The start to perfection." "Hey, Sandroff here. I found my first two candidates. As you can see. One is 13 the other 14. I hoped the girl would be pregnant but the results were negative." "Hey its been a week since I got them. They are in much better shape now. I have named them Adam and Eve. The first of many. Tomorrow trial experiments will start. Next time you hear from me will be when I get my first positive result." "Hahaha, I did it. I finally did it. Adam's thumb showed signs of growth after we amputated it. I concluded that the body only accepts new information when it needs it. And that need is at its maximum when they have to survive. So I put them in life-threatening positions so that their body would accept the given "powers". Unfortunately, Eve didn’t show any signs of modification yet." "Today Adam died of exhaustion. He didn’t survive his usual suffering. But his results are proof that I am not crazy. That my work does have value for the greater good of humanity. I ,I, I AM NOT CRAZY! Unfortunately, the girl still hasn’t shown any signs. But who knows maybe the death of the boy will trigger something. Or I will have to trigger it, somehow. My benefactors don't want to support me anymore. I have to speed it up" The screen went blank. "Is that it ?" Jesse asked annoyed to no one. He forwarded the footage until the girl suddenly popped on the screen. She angled the camera and point it to a heavy panting doctor Sandroff on the ground. He was clawing his way away from the particular spot but his efforts seemed fruitless. The girl walked over to the man on the ground. Electricity ran through her body shocking the man which caused his body to jerk aggressively every time she touched him. She walked over to a counter in the background and grabbed a set of syringes and vials. She dropped most of them on him and proceeded to kneel in front of him. "Please, please I am sorry." The doctor begged. To which the girl responded:" I killed everyone. You are next. But I won't kill you yet. I won't even give you the satisfaction of a quick death either. First I am going to tell my story. And you are going to stay quiet otherwise..." The girl picked up a syringe, knelt over him and stuck it into the top of his middle finger. The man screamed in agony as he threw his legs and tried to get the girl off of him. But the girl wouldn't budge."Shut up!" She screamed but her voice had some lower undertones. The doctor shut his mouth and whimpered."That's right" she smiled. Her teeth were sharper. longer and smeared with blood. One could say it wasn't the same girl as what the detectives had seen in the room and the footage of the soldiers were too blurry to obtain these details. The girl proceeded to sit next to the man and looked straight into the camera."I guess by the time you're seeing this. I'll already be dead. " She said with a laugh with blood dripping from the corner of her mouth. "They say you die twice. The first time is when they bury you and the second time is when someone calls out your name for the last time. Well, I doubt someone is going to remember my name but if you are willing to remember me, remember me by Eve. That's what he used to call me." She pointed to the crying man on the floor who was holding the hand with the syringe still stuck in it."Perhaps you are wondering why my face is smeared with blood or maybe wondering why I did the things I did. For you to understand, or to justify all this! You have to know who I am where I come from." She sighed."Let's start from my earliest memories, memories of us. " She paused."It was a cold rainy day much like tonight. Maybe that's a good thing. It's a good night to end our story. Call it poetic justice or whatever." She laughed and looked down at her blood-smeared hands with the fins grown from it."I remember the cold dark attic room where the raindrops hit the roof. It was the only music I enjoyed. It calmed me down. I wasn't the only one there. There were a bunch of us kids. Kidnapped, stolen, sold, taken. You name it. I can't remember my previous family or how I got there. It's all a blur for me now. But there was a man and a woman. They brought us food and cleaned our shit. And one by one the children disappeared. Until Adam and I were the only one left. We would spend days talking about things we would do when we got out. And the nights we cuddled against each other for warmth. One day they came to take me away. But Adam, he, he wouldn't let me. He fought for me. "Fight back! Fight back!" He yelled at me. I then understood no one was coming for us and that we had to fight for ourself. I don't know what it was. Maybe pity or the amount of fight we put up but eventually they took us both from the attic. They blindfolded us, drove us somewhere and when they removed the blindfold we were sitting in front of a bright spotlight with a camera pointed at us. Weird dark voices echoed from the darkness behind the camera. Little did I know that, that was an auction and we were sold to the highest bidder being doctor Sandroff." She paused and sighed."You'd think that'd be the last of it but it wasn't. " She said with a broken smile as a blood tear dripped from her right eye."Tell them what you made our captors do!" She snapped and screamed at the doctor. "Tell them!" She repeated as she broke off the syringe from his finger causing the needle to be stuck in his finger."Rape you! Rape you!" The man screamed in agony. The girl satisfied with his answer sat back next to him."After they drugged us they raped me." She said with a defeated tone. "Tell me, doctor, I never got the chance to ask you. Did you order them to do it?" She asked as she took a second syringe and stuck it into a random medicine vial and proceeded to suck the unknown substance up into the syringe,"Please stop. I am begging!" The doctor cried with praying hands."So was I! Tell me!" she returned with the same desperation."You got 9 fingers left doctor. I suggest you start talking." she said in a calmer tone as she sprayed the medicine from the syringe onto his face."I did ask them." he whimpered."Why!" she screamed."So I could have another infant specimen." He screamed in an effort to overcome his fears. Eve answered him with slamming the syringe into his chest and pushed the unknown substance into it. The man screamed in agony. "Pause the video," Martha said. I can't. This is straight-up torture. How can you people stomach this, And what sick, fuck, is this man, How can he be a doctor?" Martha exclaimed with emphasis on the curse word."I think one that told himself that his work was for the benefit of the greater good," Collins answered without looking her in the eyes. "Collins, you don't believe that. Look me in the eye and say that again." Martha demanded with shock in her tone."Of course I don't believe that. But the sick doctor believed that. He wanted to become a god. And he wanted to do everything just to obtain that." Collins snapped while he looked directly into Martha's eyes."And I am not taking his side either, but we both have to understand the motives behind everything that has led up to this moment." He continued with the same tone."So either watch it now or walk away and read it in a report where we basically describe the same thing to you in words." He said in a much calmer tone as he broke her gaze."You are all missing the bigger picture here. Sandroff wasn't the only sick fuck here. There is a whole network of people with a high status that believed in his work and caused this to happen. And every second we waste here because one of you can't stomach it. Is every second for them to cover their tracks. " Collins his words hit hard on both on James and Martha as the realization sunk in."Play the goddamn video, Jesse," Collins ordered. James eventually stepped out of the vehicle, and Martha crept up to Collins and held his hand, both of which didn't bother Collins. Jesse un-paused the video. "After we woke up we were in this lab and he named us Adam and Eve. The first of many to come. Adam told me to own the names. These scientists, they wanted to play god This was their heaven. They could do anything they want without any consequences. Guess I had to bite the apple, or rather kill everyone to get out from this hellish heaven. " She said with a laugh."That was actually kind of good, wasn't it? I wonder if I'd be a writer or something doc. You know if I didn't get captured in the first place." her smile faded and she continued: "In the beginning, they looked after us. They cleaned us and fed. But only till we got stronger. I remember we once even thought: "this might not be such a bad place!". But it wouldn't last would it? After that, for 6 years you tortured, injected, exposed us to the things you call science." She said quietly as she stared down, looking at herself."But it paid off didn't it? You succeeded. That's the reason I can do all of this." She said pointing to herself."Many came after us but they didn't survive. And you know why. Because they gave up. They accepted death the moment your sick kidnappers abducted them from their daily lives. You once told us that you would let us go once you were done." She broke off."I believed you." "Adam believed you." She started to cry."But even when you succeeded with Adam. You wanted to keep going. You wanted more. It was never enough for you was it? We were at our ends and you kept pushing us. Turning us into monsters. And when Adam told you he had enough and wanted to get out you still kept pushing him to the very edge." she said emotionally with tears rolling down her cheeks."But now I know why. You already achieved your set goals. You just wanted to see how far you can stretch it. Tell them what happened to Adam." She became hysterical and extended her fins back."Tell them." She screamed as flashes of lightning surrounded her."I killed." Eve broke him off. "That's right you killed him. And now you are going to die." The doctor started laughing confusing both Eve and the people watching the video."It won't be a quick death doctor!" Eve tried to hide her surprise."Go on kill me." The doctor said laughingly as he gargled with blood in his mouth."What's so funny?" She asked confused."Don't you realize it yet, Eve?" he asked with a smile."What do you mean?" Eve answered confused."You, Eve, You. You are my proof to the world what we can achieve. I won. People will investigate, Scientists will research. My work will echo and reverb through time. You are my muse. " He laughed. "I always knew I couldn't go public with my findings. But this, this is the best I could hope for." He continued with praise and laughter. Eve just stared to him as she was processing his words. "No!" she screamed in frustration after a few minutes as she realised what the doctor was saying. The flashes increased in intensity."You gave me the last piece of it all." he whispered in laughter"Eve, if this was the garden of Eden than by killing everyone including me in here is equal to biting into the apple cause it was your mistake that allowed me to gain so much more. I guess that makes me the devil" The doctor yelled in laughter as if he told an amazing joke."I shouldn't have" Eve whispered while she grabbed her face as the realization sank in."No!" She screamed in anger again "Why didn't you say it before?" She asked angrily."Because you were so eager to tell your story and extorted to pain and torture. And I don't know what you injected me with. I think you didn't either. You wanted it to hurt me, but instead, the pain is drifting away." He said with a smile."You don't get to have a happy ending." Eve screamed with tears running through her face."You're right! Call it dumb luck." Sandroff laughed with coughs in between."Gates opening" an automatic robotic voice spoke loudly through the lab's audio system."They're here Eve. What's your play? I am either dying by your hands or by execution. But either way. Like I said before I am going with a bang. My muse. My perfection." He said slowly with a smile as he reached up to Eve's face."No! Adam was the only thing I held dear. The only thing that kept me going through all this. You took him. You took everything!" She screamed in agony and proceeded to hack and slash the doctor. The soldiers barged in kicking over the camera. The audio cracked and broke off. You could still see an angled view of the duo on the floor and once again you could see her saying something as she was getting shot with rapid-fire. Her bluish tint disappeared with the flashes. And her fins retracted into her skin. "Adam." That's what she said. That was her final words, Martha said as she let go of Colin's hands and stepped outside in an abrupt fashion. Collins sighed and followed her. The rain had stopped for a few hours now and the clear sky had a yellowish tint as the morning sun rose up from the east."Everything okay ?" James asked as Collins stepped outside."Give us a few minutes." Collins said in a calm tone as he proceeded to walk over to Martha. She was facing him with his back and got surprised to find her with tears."You okay?" Collins asked her as they both looked at the giant sun rising above the horizon. "Yeah, I am just letting my emotions take over me." She said as she tried to wipe her tears with her hands."Actually I am not. I am sick and tired. Every goddamn time it's some sick psycho that does some shit with innocent people. What did she do wrong? Why did she deserve the things she got on her plate? And I am tired of seeing people like that, that devil of a doctor get what they want despite how fucked up they are. And you and I both know this case will probably just close without finding any leads or his so-called investors." She said angrily. "Cause this, this ...." She broke off and buried her face with her hands."I just don't know what to do now. And what to say to the press. Cause they will probably blame us for not putting someone on trial and think we are part of this network of powerful people that play god. But who do we put on trial." She went on. Collins reached for his handkerchief and handed it to her without looking at her. Martha took it and wiped her tears off with it. Collins just stood there listening to her not saying anything back. After a while, she calmed down and they both took the morning light in. After some silence that lasted not more than a minute Martha said: "this smells weird." with this referring to Collin's handkerchief to which Collins responded:" Yeah that's probably because it's not a clean one." Martha didn't hand it back to him in disgust but just stood there processing."That's it? That's what you're going to say after my whole rant?" She spoke in higher pitches."Well, at least I am not projecting my sexual frustrations on victims and ask the rookie whether or not he thinks the girl was a masochist. " Collins finally fired back. Martha was about to say something back but got cut off by Collins."Look, I don't know what's going to happen. It probably won't be pretty. And you, no we, will get a lot of backlash from the media. Ultimately you are the official representative of our whole branch. You have to say it like it is. And I think there will be a large investigation and someone will have to answer questions. "And you're not going to do it alone." He said sternly."But if you think for a second that this will end quietly, you're wrong! This will go down in history. Just as Sandroff said. But the thing is we get to decide how. We'll make sure Adam and Eve get remembered. Not as two lab rats, but two warriors of our generation that set something in motion bigger than any of us can ever be. He answered her calm and quietly with a pauses in between his words as he turned to meet her eyes."Thanks." She said with a half-smile as she handed back his handkerchief but Collins knew the thanks wasn't just for the handkerchief and he answered her with "anytime boss."
